This was not the case with Then She Was Gone, which had me hooked from the beginning.Īt first glance, it may seem like we’ve been here before: a daughter missing, a mother distraught and desperate to uncover the truth. These subsequent thrillers were really missing that element to draw me in, leaving me uninterested in the plot and wanting more from the characters. The last few Jewell thrillers I’ve read have been disappointing and underwhelming misses: her 2020 release Invisible Girl, her 2019 release The Family Upstairs, and her 2018 release Watching You. I’ve been anxious to find Jewell’s next thrilling gem ever since I read her 2017 thriller Then She Was Gone. Her newest release, The Night She Disappeared, is arguably her most emotionally driven thriller yet, taking up themes of grief and abusive relationships. Spooky season is just about over, but some of us still can’t get enough thrillers and chills to last till next year! As an avid thriller reader, I am one of those people, which is why I’ve now read five of best-selling thriller-author Lisa Jewell’s spine-tingling novels over the past few years. Book Content Warnings: sexual assault, domestic abuse, gun violence, tight spaces (claustrophobia)

As we follow the siblings over half a century, through their father’s second marriage to the archetypal evil stepmother and beyond, well into their own adulthood, Patchett creates an intimate portrait of two people whose relationship is the one thing that seems to anchor them, the central column around which the houses of their individual lives can be built. With their mother having walked out when Danny was too young to remember, it falls to Maeve to slip into the role of mother, and it is their incredibly close brother–sister relationship that forms the heart of the novel. Danny, our first-person narrator, grows up with his father and sister Maeve, older by seven years, in what is referred to as ‘the Dutch House’, an architectural marvel that catches the attention of all who glimpse it. The Dutch House is one of those works of fiction that are difficult to describe, because for much of the time not an awful lot is happening – it’s a novel that is simply about life. And it serves to prove that theirs is definitely not the author for me. So after seeing someone post about the note she made at Matchmaker, I borrowed it to read the note only. It’s clear as day and been done to death by much better writers.Īnd edited to add that that I was completely correct in my entire review, well ahead of time. She seems to think, idiotic plot will make us swoon over him, because who cares where his d*** went as long as he only “loved” her. The author actually thinks all of her readers are dumb, basic, and shallow. He is an unrepentant manwhore who has probably screwed hundreds of women. Brooklyn is still alive, they will get together FIFTEEN YEARS LATER!. She even seems to think she’s slick and everyone can’t see what she is doing with the plot. This author actually thinks this is appropriate and not completely fraudulent to her readers. A 4 book series literally titled as high school is picking of 15 years in the future. Kelly the attempted to assault Ritter but was told to stand down by Greer. Ritter disregarded these facts, telling Kelly that they were expendable. Back at the helicopter, Ritter was again questioned by Kelly who called out his deceit and reminded him that a member of his team had been killed. Kelly disregarded this order and rescued Greer from approaching Russian military. Despite Kelly's protests to recover the SEAL's body and rescue Karen Greer who had been separated in the explosion, Ritter ordered them continue with Randy's extraction. Before Ritter could be questioned further, they were attacked by an RPG, killing a SEAL member. This fact was revealed to the SEALs after they rescued Randy when SEAL team leader John Kelly pointed out their Russian equipment. In reality, Ritter was fully aware that that the captors had been Russian military and that Randy was being held at a Russian arms depot. During the initial briefing, Ritter told the SEALs that the captors were suspected ISIS members and that Randy was being held at a safehouse. The material varies in quality, effectiveness and level of violence, but on the whole the stories testify to an imaginative writer with a skilled, even sublime grasp. Sometimes writing in a fetchingly archaic style more appropriate (despite modern slang) for Weird Tales in the 1920s and ’30s, DiCristofano conjures up seven macabre yarns (or six plus a plotless, introspective concluding monologue that lends the anthology its title). This is the first collection of short stories by DiCristofano-the title’s “Volume 1” designation presumes more are to be expected, and that’s not a bad thing, not a bad thing at all, especially for fantastic-fiction fans whose tastes run more toward thoughtful awe than splatterpunk and visceral torture-porn shock. Seven horror and fantasy stories inspire chills and awe in haunted and mythic locations, ranging from a serial killer’s lair to war-torn ancient Greece to the neglected Garden of Eden. |
